Life on the historic peninsula of Charleston is unlike any other place in the US. It’s truly a place where Southern charm exudes around every corner whether it’s the cobblestone streets found in the famed French Quarter or the elegance and grandeur of South of Broad. Each of the distinct neighborhoods has a feel and vibe all of its own, and once you visit we’re certain you’ll want to stay on forever.

One of our favorite things about living in the Holy City (named as such because no building is higher than the highest church steeple), is the rich history that is on display through its architecture. These marvel that grace the streets are a living testament of the storied and at times enduring past, and seem to tell a story all of their own. You’ll notice Charleston single and double homes, Georgian townhomes, Antebellum style mansions, and of course the famous row homes of Rainbow Row, and be beckoned back to a time long ago. And of course there are all of the courtyards, wrought-iron gates that provide entrance into intimate parks, gas lanterns, and cobblestone streets all of which create a certain allure to the peninsula.

Of course are other top reason for calling Charleston home, is the wide array of things to do. Truly a gastronomy haven, that boasts a culinary scene that rivals many large cities, we can’t get enough of the incredible selection of dining options that offer cuisines from around the world from some of the best world-class chefs. One can find everything from intimate cafes, to outdoor bbq pits, to fine dining, and of course we can’t get enough of some of the city’s signature dishes including: shrimp and grits, coconut cake, praline pecans, she crab bisque, fried okra, and the freshest seafood straight off the boat.

In addition, the walkability of downtown affords residents and tourists alike the ability to enjoy a rich and diverse culture. There are many historic points of interest, theaters, boutiques, art galleries, breweries, and much much more to explore. And life here always seem to offer a special local event, festival, or farmer’s market that fosters a sense of community. Also, check out some of the world famous festivals like Spoleto and Charleston Wine & Food Festival that simply can’t be missed and which happen each year.

Clearly, there’s very good reasons so many people want to call Charleston home, and that being said there are a number of neighborhoods that have hit our list as being highly popular at the moment. Of course, there will always be a huge demand for areas like South of Broad, the French Quarter, Ansonborough, and Harleston Village, but this year we’re here to give you a few more to focus on as you search for properties downtown.

Cannonborough | Elliotborough

This area still remains highly sought after since it has the most favorable STR rules on the Peninsula. And for this reason not only have many properties found their way into lucrative short term rentals, but there have been more and more great eateries, bars, and cafes open to support the increase in tourists to the enclave. Couple that with being below the Septima Parkway, aka, “The Crosstown”, and you’ve got a magical formula for many.

Hampton Park | West Side

With grand Hampton Park as its hub, this residential spot has streets lined with live oaks and sidewalks for strolling. We love that this area has typically a bit more green space making it a bit more peaceful and tranquil than some of the more bustling areas of town. And there are some magnificent historic properties to be found still just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the downtown amenities.

Eastside

A neighborhood on the rise and with easy access to get on and off of the peninsula, we love that the area is so close to so much. Also, an increasing number of new businesses are popping up, and we have continually seen investors and builders improving the area so one can find many opportunities for renovated properties continually coming to market.

North Central

With a high walk score and the new Lowcountry Line Park which has been proposed to run through the area, this area is seeing a revitalization and offers more affordable downtown housing options. Again, you have the ease of access on and off the Peninsula and the ability to be close to it all. We suspect this area will continue to see many renovation improvements this year.

So count this as an invitation to celebrate all that Charleston has to offer. The charm of the Holy City can’t be beat and we are certain after one waterfront stroll you’ll want to call it home. Of course, we’ll be here to assist in your finding that special place with that certain southern charm.
