James Island
The Vibe
Just a short drive away from Downtown Charleston, and yet a completely different and relaxed vibe, lies James Island. Here the lifestyle is characterized by the incredible beauty, laid-back community, and coastal serenity.
One of the main appeals to living on James Island, is that its residents enjoy easy access to not only Folly Beach, but also many waterways and parks. It has become for this reason a desirable place for those who enjoy fishing, kayaking, and surfing. And yet the location being so close to Charleston offers a unique combination of both coastal living and cultural richness. Real Estate here is about as diverse as it gets, and it is common to find an eclectic blend of home options right in the same neighborhood. There are both newer, modern developments, historic homes, and small beach cottages. This diversity attracts a wide array of individuals and families adding to the community.
If outdoor pursuits coupled with a close proximity to urban amenities is up your alley, this just might be the best compromise you’ll find for living in Charleston. And with a personality that is a split between natural and yet elegant. Oh, and we think there are some of the best sunsets to be seen here.
PROS & CONS
-
Cost
This is one of the more affordable areas of town due to the wide variety of housing options.
-
Flooding
They don’t call it the Lowcountry without good reason, and this area like most in the Charelston area is prone to coastal flooding especially during storms.
-
Location, Location
Sandwiched between Folly Beach and Downtown Charleston is never a bad place to be. And this offers a blend of natural beauty \ outdoor access coupled with modern amenities \ conveniences.
-
Development
There have been continued concerns over the over development of the area and lack of preservation of the natural environment. This has led many to feel that the rapid growth has been a negative for the local area.
-
Natural Beauty
The beauty here is natural and pristine. One can find incredible marsh views and parks, such as the popular James Island County Park, affording many outdoor options.
-
Lack of Conveniences
Though it certainly has its own mix of locally owned and chain conveniences, a place without a Target seems that it doesn’t compare when assessing other areas of a similar size. Some may find this limiting.
