Mount Pleasant

The Vibe

Just over the Ravanel Bridge from the Historic Peninsula of Downtown Charleston lies the town of Mount Pleasant. It is at the same time quaint yet modern and suburbia yet small community.

With its picturesque marshes, rivers, and waterfront, this is a lively town that offers many conveniences. In fact, many believe Mount Pleasant simply has it all since it is situated within close proximity to both Downtown Charleston and the barrier islands and thus the beaches of Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms. Here it is all about the Lowcountry lifestyle and even with the development that area has seen in the past 2 decades there is still a feel of local community. There is also a diverse array of neighborhoods from large multi-planned developments to quaint hamlets like Old Village. And there is pretty much every convenience that you might need right off of the main thoroughfare, hwy 17. And though the area has seen significant growth and has been a popular destination for both tourists and new residents alike, the town has made a number of efforts to curtail future growth in order to both maintain the character of the area and allow for expansion. In our minds, Mount Pleasant is truly a place that offers a unique opportunity to blend a modern everyday life with the feeling of always being on vacation in a popular coastal getaway destination.

PROS & CONS

  • Proximity to Charleston

This is about as close as it gets to the historic peninsula, as it’s just minutes from downtown and yet affords typically larger size lots and extra green space.

  • Traffic Congestion

Talk to any local and you will soon find that the area has changed and seen a ton of development leading to a growing problem of traffic and congestion, especially on hwy 17.

  • Accessibility

Not only is Mount Pleasant close to downtown, but it is also near to the beaches and major highways. The airport is only 20-30 minutes away as well.

  • Over Development

There has been a concern with development in the area which has led to environmental concerns and congestion. Also, many feel Mount Pleasant no longer has the appeal it once did due to an over commercialization of the area.

  • Family Friendly

The area appeals to families due to the high quality of education, numerous recreation opportunities, and large number of parks.

  • Cost

Since the area has been one of the most desirable in Charleston County for quite some time, it stands to reason that it also carries a high cost of living, and one that only seems to be rising.
