John's Island

The Vibe

Just minutes from downtown Charleston, lies a place where time seems to return to yester-year. John’s Island, South Carolina offers a unique blend of rural tranquility and warm Southern charm, making it a wonderful destination and place to call home.

Known for its incredible marsh views and windy roads, the live oak trees form a canopy that is both magical and serene as you make your way onto the island. This enchanting place is steeped in the rich history of both the farmers and local purveyors that have settled here and tended to the land, and these people are still a testament to the distinctive charm that exudes.

Whether you’re drawn to the area for the lush landscape, majestic oaks, or proximity to the beaches, you’ll discover a plentitude of housing options from new developments, to rural farm retreats to upscale properties on the water. And one things for sure this setting that blends Southern living and modern elegance will make you want to call this welcoming enclave home.

PROS & CONS

  • Rural Tranquility

Though just over the bridge from livlier James Island, this enclave is quiet and more rural. You’ll discover wide open farm fields and windy roads through nature as you travel to its furthest barrier islands.

  • Development

The days of John’s Island being off the beaten path are unfortunately gone, and this gem has been discovered. That being said there is much development in certain parts of the island.

  • Real Estate

We love that there are a wide range of options when it comes to real estate. In fact, this is one of the last places near the coast that offers acreage though it is going fast.

  • Limited Employment

Though there are more and more businesses that serve the local community and tourism, there is still a lack of employment on the island that cause many to seek work in Charleston and other suburbs.

  • Local Produce & Purveyors

The farmers markets offering everything from fresh eggs to handmade lotions and pies truly give one a sense of connection to the land.

  • Limited Amenities

Many larger chains are found further afield in West Ashley or Charleston, making some conveniences hard to find on the island.
