Old Village | Mt. Pleasant
The Vibe
Just over the Ravanel Bridge from Downtown Charleston lies a quaint neighborhood where one feels like they took a step back in time. Meet Old Village, a highly sought after enclave in South Mount Pleasant, and rightfully so.
This is a spot that exudes a timeless charm that hugs the coastline with Sullivan’s on one side and the Charleston Harbor on the other. It’s idyllic tree-lined streets give a palpable sense of community and whisper stories from the village’s historic past. Life here is extremely laid-back where a mason jar of sweet tea is shared on the front porch with neighbors and residents drive their LSVs and ride their beach cruisers into the little downtown strip more than they drive. And of course their is the iconic Pitt Street Bridge where residents enjoy a stroll after dinner for a beautiful sunset with Charleston in the background.
Real estate here comes at a premium, and is often scooped before it hits the market, and a drive through the area shows the extensive renovations and construction that is underway on many of these elegant historic properties. And one of the biggest draws in our minds is the incredible uniqueness that exudes from each home. You’ll find small bungalows next to one story ranch homes followed by luxurious waterfront coastal homes.
No matter what draws you to the area, we’re certain you’ll fall in love just as we have. And remember you don’t have to be from the South, “as long as you get here as fast as you can”.
PROS & CONS
-
Historical Charm
There is just a certain allure to this neighborhood with its elegant and unique properties and tree-lined streets. It’s perfect for after dinner strolls with sweet tea in hand.
-
Cost
This idyllic neighborhood certainly comes at a pretty penny. Expect higher real estate prices compared to the rest of Charleston.
-
Community
This is a close knit community that one feels apart of right from the start. There is a local Charlestonian feel though this has in recent years become a favorite amongst transplants from out of state.
-
Hurricane & Flooding
With it’s proximity to the water, this waterfront community like many on our list does experience it’s fair share of flooding and there is a risk for hurricanes and tropical storms.
-
Local Scene
Holding anchor in the downtown block is our beloved Post House Inn, a neighborhood eatery and historic inn. You’ll also find plenty of small boutiques and restaurants offering the very best of locally crafted and prepared.
-
Local Commission
Many move here ready to go to work on their dream home, and find that there are many hurdles in getting approval from the Historic Preservation Commission. In addition, the time for approvals seems to drag on and on for many.
