Folly Beach
The Vibe
Surf Meets Chill at the “Edge of America”
Folly Beach is a captivating barrier island just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. We love the distinct surfer chill vibe that you won’t find elsewhere in the Charleston area, and the waves simply can’t be beat. In fact, we’ve heard they are some of the best on the East Coast.
Here on the island you’ll enjoy a quaint downtown with many restaurant and shopping options along with a lively pier that just underwent a new renovation. And the natural environment is an absolute haven for sun seekers and water enthusiasts alike, offering activities from surfing to shelling to kayaking. If you’re looking to own on the Island, an eclectic mix of options awaits from classic surf shacks and beachfront bungalows to luxury upscale oceanfront properties. Historically many homes have been employed as short term rentals adding another benefit to life on the island, though check out our article here for the changes that we saw in 2023. This all being said, Folly has an undeniable spirit where the sun and sea leave you coming back for more.
PROS & CONS
-
Beachfront Lifestyle
The island offers some of the most pristine beaches with easy access no matter where you are on the island. In fact, you are always a step away from the Ocean.
-
Tourists
As a top destination each year in South Carolina and beyond, the sleepy island transforms during high season and spring break. Of course, local businesses flourish, but the traffic and crowded beaches can be a negative.
-
Laid- Back Community
Here a tight-knit community with a friendly vibe gives a sense of belonging. You’ll likely meet many other surfer enthusiasts, outdoor lovers, and people like you who have fallen for the slow pace.
-
Hurricane & Flooding
Like other barrier islands around Charleston, Folly also is at an increased risk when it comes to heavy rains, storm surges, and flooding. Of course, we always recommend properly maintaining and insuring your properties.
-
Proximity to Charleston
You are a mere 20-30 min from the liveliness of downtown Charleston and just a bridge away from the many conveniences of James Island. Even though you’ll feel like you are miles away on your beach retreat.
-
Lack of Employment
Though there is a lively downtown with ample shops and restaurants, aside from that this is primarily a beach destination and so jobs are pretty limited. Many residents may find they are commuting to Charleston for further options.
