Sullivan’s Island, SC: A Coastal Haven

Nestled just off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, Sullivan’s Island stands proud with a distinct vibe exuding that quintessential Lowcountry charm. After just one visit you’ll discover a unique blend of history, stunning ocean views, and a laid-back beach vibe.

The Vibe

Sullivan’s Island truly has a distinct vibe that you won’t find anywhere else, and to be honest, that’s why we feel the Charleston barrier islands are so special. Each one has its own personality straight down to the local businesses and style of homes. Here on Sullivan’s, you are greeted first by the sweeping ocean views and miles of endless beach. It’s beach on one side, that gently winds it’s way to the Charleston Harbor, while on the other side it’s all about the Intracoastal and Old Village, Mount Pleasant. Life here is lived on the water, and one can certainly see why. And it’s this distinct coastal living lifestyle that creates an inviting ambiance and a local community feel. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, where nature puts on a show each day at sunrise and sunset, and where you feel at home.

Local Business Scene

One of the beauties of Sullivan’s Island is its sweet little “downtown” strip, that offers a quaint collection of local businesses, adding a vibrant scene. Some of our favorite boutiques and restaurants are there, and there’s truly something for everyone.

  • Poe’s Tavern: No list would be complete without a mention of this institution. Of course, its namesake is Mr. Edgar Allan himself who was stationed here on the island back in the 19th century. A visit to Poe’s is unique and they are known for pub fare and burgers.

  • Bennie & Coco: With its cute white storefront trimmed in bright ocean blue, this boutique is one of our go-to spots for women’s clothing. Inside you’ll find bright colors, vibrant patterns, and clothing that will take you from the beach to cocktails. We love the mix of rocker tees, flowy dresses, and bathing suits, that are a bit rocker meets surfer gal.

  • Goldbug: Goldbug is the creation of owner/designer Ashley Reid Martin, who showcases her lovely handmade jewelry amongst an incredibly curated collection of finds. Beside her one of a kind pieces, you’ll find apothecary items, unique gifts, and other sweet treasures with which to fill your space and heart.

  • High Thyme: After a day at the beach, we love a meal at this Sullivan’s favorite. It’s a vibrant mix of flavors offering a fresh fine dining scene, and we’ll wait extra time to be seated on the porch overlooking all the passerby’s.

  • Sullivan’s Fish Camp: Another incredible creation by Charleston’s own Basic Projects, the creative child of Ben and Kate Towill (also owner’s of Basic Kitchen and Post House Inn, 2 of our other favorites). SFC has a vibe all of its own, with its nostalgic atmosphere where seafood baskets filled with fresh dayboat fish.

  • The Longboard: And after a long day at the beach who doesn’t want to enjoy a drink? Our top spot is Sullivan’s Longboard Restaurant. This is the second location, in fact, the first is in St. Thomas USVI so pack your bags, but don’t worry the owners have infused the space with that special Caribbean flair. You’ll find handcrafted cocktails and fresh island spiced seafood dishes.

An iconic symbol of Sullivan’s, the famed lighthouse. Find it at the end of Station 18.

Play

Beyond the obvious days spent on Sullivan’s pristine beaches, here are a couple ideas for how to spend your time:

  • Fort Moultrie: The epicenter of history on the island, that includes a collection of fortifications that played a focal role in the protection of the Charleston Peninsula starting in the American Revolution. An afternoon spent winding through the exhibits offers visitors not only a step back in time but stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Kite Board: If lounging lazily on the beach isn’t your thing, try your hand at kite boarding. Sullivan’s at low tide offers sandbars and flat water which make it the ideal spot for kite boarding (so they say, we’ve never tried). Rentals and more info here: Force Kite & Wake

So there you have it, good ole Sullivan’s Island. Whether you’re drawn to the history, culinary delights or the allure of simple slow paced coastal living, we think you’ll want to stay awhile.
