Small Biz Spotlight: Abigail King Functional Nutrition

Many of you know that I have been a lifelong advocate for health and wellness, and as such I am incredibly thrilled to share this Small Business Spotlight: Abigail King Functional Nutrition. I found Ms. King after seeking answers for many months to my complex hormonal issues. I had been from Doctor to Doctor to Naturopath to Alternative Health Practitioner, on and on… until finally a friend of a friend (that’s usually how it is), recommended her. And I can honestly say that I would likely not have found my way back to a balanced and healthy state without her incredible amount of insight and guidance.

So first a bit about Abigail King and her practice. To start, Ms. King is a board Certified Nutrition Specialist, which is really the highest credential in advanced nutrition. She also has a B.S. in Public Health from the College of Charleston and a Master’s degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from the University of Western States, along with 5 years training with a Naturopathic Doctor here in the Lowcountry. So, of course, she has a passion for food and a focus on “real food, real ingredients, and a clean diet”, but her expertise does not stop there. In fact, she has proven to be one of the most knowledgable individuals I’ve worked with regarding women’s health and hormonal issues.

The first step on my own personal wellness path with Ms. King was an Initial Consultation. During this call, she performed an in-depth review of my main concerns, diet, lifestyle habits, as well as, my past medical testing and history. From there she began to offer recommendations on how I might begin to restore balance in the body and what additional lab testing and supplementation I might need.

After the consultation I realized the need for more in-depth testing. This was truly insightful since I felt at about a year into dozens of Doctor appointments I had probably had every test, but Ms. King helped me to understand that I was missing a crucial piece and why. She suggested the DUTCH test which would offer me the ability to gain insight into how I was metabolizing estrogen not just producing it. I learned that it was incredibly important to glean how my body was breaking it down and pinpoint the exact detoxification pathway that it was using. These missing pieces I would come to realize offered the answers I needed to understand the why behind the symptoms I was experiencing.

After receiving my test results Ms. King then set out customizing a plan of action that included a detailed nutrition plan, supplement plan, and overall lifestyle routine. Through this process we looked at applying therapies to focus on not just balancing my hormones, but also optimizing gut health, aiding the detoxification process, and decreasing inflammation. All of these individualized recommendations began to change the path that I was on, and I finally began to see some positive changes. I also was incredibly impressed at how well Ms. King incorporated the guidance and plans offered by my medical team. This was an incredibly important piece in fully integrating an overall health plan for me personally, and she was simply the best for the job!

Overall, if you are looking to optimize your health and nutrition, I would highly recommend Abigail King Functional Nutrition. And don’t worry if you are not local to the Charleston, South Carolina area, since she does offer a fully virtual practice. In addition, she also offers the below lab testing depending on the individual’s needs.
