Pet Friendly Parks: Charleston, SC
If you know me, you know I adore the pups, especially my fluffy and floofy mini Sheepadoodle, Folly. That’s why she comes with me most everywhere I go, and thankfully there are so many great spots in Charleston that she gets to enjoy. From shopping on King Street to kayaking the Copahee Sound, to a staycation downtown, she has done it all. And there is nothing better than a long patio hangout session with her fave peeps and doggie biscuit. But if you ask Folly I’m sure she’d say her favorite pastime is visiting one of our city’s pet friendly parks. Here’s a guide to the top pet-friendly parks where both you and your four-legged pal can enjoy some outdoor summer fun.
Palmetto Islands County Park
Palmetto Islands County Park is a must-visit for any dog owner in Charleston. Located off of scenic Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant, this park offers an expansive 950 acre space with diverse natural habitats and beautiful scenic marshland. One of its standout features for the pups is the dog park which is fenced in so that the pups can run freely and take in that salty air. Also a bonus is that the park offers 2 distinct areas so that large pups can be separated from the small pups if desired. Folly also loves a stroll along the many miles of walking trails and boardwalks across the marsh, and the fact that much of it is shaded is perfect for those hot summer days. Also, don’t forget to check out the incredible wildlife while you’re there, it is incredible.
Daniel Island Waterfront Park
Daniel Island Waterfront Park is another top destination on Folly’s list. Personally I love this park that offers beautiful scenic views of the Wando River and swings for taking in the scenery. There is also a large open green space that is ideal for a game of fetch or picnic with your pooch. And after a still along the river or game on the lawn be sure to pop into one of the many restaurants for a bevvie and pup cup.
Pitt Street Bridge
Of course we are a bit partial since this spot holds a special place in our hearts, but this pedestrian-friendly park has absolutely spectacular views of the surrounding marshlands and Charleston Harbor. It’s the perfect spot that’s also a historic site and is an absolute favorite among dog owners for its unique setting and easy-going atmosphere. The long, flat pathway is excellent for walking, jogging, or biking with your dog, and the open areas along the path provide plenty of space for dogs to explore. The bridge’s location also makes it a great spot for bird watching and enjoying stunning sunsets. Oh and did we mention be sure to stroll the quaint streets of Old Village while you are at it, it’s our favorite little local spot in town.
James Island County Park
James Island County Park is a sprawling 650 acre park that offers plenty activities for both dogs and their owners alike. The park features a dedicated dog park with a large fenced-in area, a dog beach, and a lake where dogs can swim and cool off on hot days. There are also many walking trails and picnic areas to explore which is perfect for an adventure. Oh and don’t forget to check out the agility course, where dogs can test their skills and burn off some pup energy. We think that this spot is hard to beat, and with the marsh views and convenient location to downtown, James Island, and Johns Island it’s top on our list.
Hampton Park
Located in downtown Charleston, Hampton Park is one of the city’s largest parks and a local favorite for dog walking. This 60-acre park is beautifully landscaped with a variety of sweet spots to check out from the grand pond always filled with birds, to the gazebo, and walking trails. The wide, paved pathways make it easy to stroll with your dog, and there are plenty of shaded areas to relax and enjoy the scenery. Hampton Park is just minutes from the hustle and bustle of downtown, but offer a tranquil setting and great spot for an active or relaxing lunch break.
We love how Charleston has no shortage of places to explore and enjoy with your dog, and be sure to check out our top pet friendly stays and restaurants and plan a day with your pup.
