Historic Charleston Peninsula: East Central (NOMO) | Eastside | North Central

Life on the historic peninsula of Charleston is unlike any other place in the US. It’s truly a place where Southern charm exudes around every corner whether it’s the cobblestone streets found in the famed French Quarter or the elegance and grandeur of South of Broad. Each of the distinct neighborhoods has a feel and vibe all of its own, and once you visit we’re certain you’ll want to stay on forever.

One of our favorite things about living in the Holy City (named as such because no building is higher than the highest church steeple), is the rich history that is on display through its architecture. These marvels that grace the streets are a living testament of the storied and at times enduring past, and seem to tell a story all of their own. You’ll notice Charleston single and double homes, Georgian townhomes, Antebellum style mansions, and of course the famous row homes of Rainbow Row, and be beckoned back to a time long ago. And of course there are all of the courtyards, wrought-iron gates that provide entrance into intimate parks, gas lanterns, and cobblestone streets all of which create a certain allure to the peninsula.

The Vibe

Actually 3 distinct neighborhoods that make up the Eastside by the Port and the Neck of the Peninsula, these areas were at one time mainly industrial and tired. However, now we have seen a real resurgence as modern multifamily developments and new construction have taken place. Also, many of the industrial warehouses have been converted into mixed use commercial and residential spaces. Add this to a lower price tag and the convenience of being right off of the bridges, and this area is sure to see a continued interest from both a livability and an investment standpoint.

Our Fave Spots

Mercantile & Mash:

A go to for sandwiches, salads, and brunch items. Plus, we love their quick pick up market items that are locally sourced.

Edmund’s Oast:

A restaurant, brewpub, with a taproom. The restaurant is fine dining and offers a cozy atmosphere and a wonderful and lively in summer courtyard.

Lewis Barbecue:

Though we know there are contenders in the Charleston BBQ scene, this is our top pick in the city. We love the patio with smokehouse and their Mac-n-cheese is craveable.

Revelry Brewing:

Local brewery housed in a shipping container with rooftop bar and small bites.

Local Love

Taco Boy:

The place for tacos with a huge outdoor seating area.

Cigar Factory:

Overlooking the Charleston port with water views, this mixed use building houses plenty of commercial space, including Smith Spencer Real Estate, as well as, Mercantile and Mash, Stella Nova, Rappahanock Oysters, and more.

The Wonderer:

Where Tulum meets the Lowcountry. A private social club offering a co-work space, pool, fitness classes, and community events.

Jane Pope Jewlery:

Our favorite local fine jewelry designer. Expect fine, minimal pieces that are timeless and modern.

The Moxy Hotel:

New on the scene is this edgy rockstar vibe hotel with an easy to access location to downtown and beyond.
