Kayaking Charleston

We love a good paddle, and lucky for us the Charleston area is ripe with more put ins than we can possibly get to in one lifetime. And we absolutely know that one of the best ways to explore this stunning area is by taking to its waters in a kayak. Whether you call yourself a seasoned paddler or a beginner, there is adventure around every marsh bend and we know you will agree that the region’s natural beauty and wildlife is unparalleled. That being said there is one spot in particular that has our heart and this hidden gem is the belle of the ball.

📍Copahee Sound
Mount Pleasant

The word is out, and this is one of our secret put in spots in the area. Though it can be highly tidal and sometimes a bit rougher water, the expansive never-ending marshlands and incredible views of the Intracoastal Waterway are unparalleled. This expansive body of water offers panoramic views and is great for either an experienced paddler or novice. Paddling through Copahee Sound feels like you are miles away from civilization though just a few minutes from the heart of Mount P in reality. And we have to say the untouched beauty of this area is perfect for spotting a wide variety of birds and fish.

Logistics

Copahee Sound is located just north of Charleston, making it an easily accessible destination for both locals and visitors. The sound is characterized by its wide, open waters and the intricate network of tidal creeks and marshlands that surround it. From North Mount Pleasant just follow 17 North to the turn off for Gadsenville Boat Launch.

Wildlife

One of the most captivating aspects of kayaking in Copahee Sound is the opportunity to encounter a wide variety of wildlife. We routinely see dolphins, fish, crabs, and even the occasional shark or ray. The sound is also a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as egrets, herons, pelicans, and ospreys frequently seen soaring overhead or wading in the shallows.

Paddling Routes

There are several paddling routes to choose from when exploring Copahee Sound, each offering its own unique perspective of the area. One popular route begins at the Gadsdenville Public Boat Landing, where kayakers can launch into the calm waters of the sound. From here, paddlers can explore the intricate network of tidal creeks that wind through the surrounding marshlands. These creeks provide a more sheltered environment, making them ideal for beginners or those looking for a peaceful paddle.

For a more challenging adventure, experienced kayakers can venture out into the open waters of the sound itself. Paddling across the broad expanse of Copahee Sound offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the distant silhouette of the Intracoastal Waterway and the lush, green marshes that line the shore. The open waters can be more dynamic, with wind and tides creating varying conditions, so it’s important to be prepared and aware of the weather and tides before setting out. We’ve even launched here to paddle out to Caper’s Island for a night on the beach camped under the stars.

Practical Tips

Before heading out, it’s essential to check the tides and weather conditions, as the tidal currents in Copahee Sound can be strong and the weather can change quickly. Bringing plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat is also advisable, as there is little shade on the water. For those new to kayaking or unfamiliar with the area, joining a guided tour can be a great way to explore the sound safely and learn more about its unique ecosystem.

Kayaking the Copahee Sound in Mount Pleasant is an experience that encapsulates the essence of the Lowcountry. So grab a paddle, launch your kayak, and immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of this Lowcountry gem.
