Historic Charleston Peninsula: West Side | Hampton Park Terrace

Life on the historic peninsula of Charleston is unlike any other place in the US. It’s truly a place where Southern charm exudes around every corner whether it’s the cobblestone streets found in the famed French Quarter or the elegance and grandeur of South of Broad. Each of the distinct neighborhoods has a feel and vibe all of its own, and once you visit we’re certain you’ll want to stay on forever.

One of our favorite things about living in the Holy City (named as such because no building is higher than the highest church steeple), is the rich history that is on display through its architecture. These marvels that grace the streets are a living testament of the storied and at times enduring past, and seem to tell a story all of their own. You’ll notice Charleston single and double homes, Georgian townhomes, Antebellum style mansions, and of course the famous row homes of Rainbow Row, and be beckoned back to a time long ago. And of course there are all of the courtyards, wrought-iron gates that provide entrance into intimate parks, gas lanterns, and cobblestone streets all of which create a certain allure to the peninsula.

The Vibe

Situated around the incredible Hampton Park, this neighborhood has a strong community feel as evidenced by the families that can be seen on the sidewalks. Residents here enjoy all the park has to offer including beautiful gardens, a pond, and walking paths. This central feature along with the green tree lined streets give this neighborhood a peaceful feel. And with Craftsman homes and bungalows there is a distinctly different feel to this neighborhood than others that we’ve noted on the Peninsula. Hampton Park is also close to the educational institutions of Ashley Hall and The Citadel which also appeals to those who are might make use of their academic offerings.

Local Love

Harold’s Cabin:

A Westside institution dating back to the 1920’s, and originally run by Harold himself, and his wife as a snowball shop. Now reimagined as a corner store and restaurant that has a distinct cozy and local vibe.

Huriyali:

A healthy spot with vegetarian and fresh salads, acai bowls, and smoothies. A favorite staple for us.

Berkeley’s:

“Sandwiches and suppers”. Comfort food at it’s finest with a dog friendly patio.

Ethos Athletic Club:

Our favorite “gym” in town. Though gym is truly an understatement as this modern fitness center offers a state of the art environment that includes cold plunge, sauna, steam room, and swanky Ivy League interior vibe.
